Mental Meat Heads

I’ve got that after Christmas feeling. Not the one where you’re all bloated from too much turkey and sweets and disappointed that you didn’t get that pony again this year, but the one that’s the natural denouement that comes from getting all ramped up for something awesome, and it was awesome, but now it’s over and you’ve got to start thinking about going back to school, maybe even finish that book report you were putting off. This past weekend was nothing short of amazing – the culmination of several months effort and planning, but also the high point of my… Read More »

Chip Conrad

If the fitness industry was William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream Chip Conrad would undoubtedly be the mischievous Puck. Chip is a bundle of walking paradoxes, only one of which is that he’s both a vegetarian and a competitive weightlifter, and he likes it that way.  An apostle of physical culture, his passion for true fitness is so strong even he can’t take it seriously. I am proud to consider Chip my mentor and friend and honored that a man who, in this day and age of modern technology, still can’t be reached by telephone managed an hour long conversation with me via… Read More »

Why?

I’m listening to a book right now entitled Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action. It’s written by Simon Sinek The premise of the book is that all great leaders, both leaders of people and industry, from Martin Luther King, Jr. to Apple, Inc, start with their own fundamental “Why.” This is the big “Why.” The one that explains everything they do and guides the “How” and “What” they do. Take me, for instance. The “What” of what I do is that I run a gym and offer personal training services. My “How” is the way… Read More »

Making Gains

A long time client of the personal training side of the gym approached me late in the afternoon one day earlier this week. Our gym is on his walking route and he always stops by for water. I was pacing the open space of my gym on the phone with my wife (to his credit I was using headphones and the speaker option so it wasn’t readily apparent that I was on the phone.) He looked at me and pointedly asked, “Are you putting on weight?” “Yep,” I said. “On purpose?” “Yep.” With a look of absolute incredulity he asked,… Read More »

Diana Salinas

It’s Wednesday, my friends, and I, for one, am happy to be back into the swing of things after the holidays.  This week’s interview is Diana Salinas, the mastermind of Bootcamp Divas, which is run out of CrossFit Seguin in Seguin, Texas. Diana is an Underground Strength Coach, a powerful advocate for women’s strength and fitness and the personal development these help ensure.  Diana is a role model not only for her physical prowess, but for her business acumen as well.  At present, Bootcamp Divas has a very low turn over rate, if you’re in the area and interested in… Read More »

Luis Carrillo

Happy New Year! To kick off 2013 I’ve included an interview I did with Strengthology student, Luis Carrillo.  Luis lives and trains in San Diego, California. Luis traveled to St. Petersburg in June of 2012 for a Strengthology I workshop with Elliott Hulse.  There he discovered several imbalances, or what Elliott calls “muscle viruses.”  Empowered with a new knowledge for correcting those imbalances and a rekindled passion for change.  Luis set to work. In three short months he gained five pounds of muscle and made great strides in his mobility and athleticism — all with just bodyweight training. To learn… Read More »

Charles Abouzied

Happy Holidays, ya’ll. I hope you all had a very Merry Christmas.  Today I’m bringing you an interview with Charles Abouzied.  Charles runs Crossfit House of Pain up in New Jersey.  I met him last summer at the Underground Conference 2012. In a room full of fitness pros Charles certainly stands out.  As you can see from his picture, Charles is a big man and at first glance not what you would expect in a fitness professional.  But don’t be too quick to judge, because Charles will quickly show you his abilities far out strip what his appearance might imply.… Read More »

Wild One

All too often the face we present to the world is our copy of someone we think is more successful than we are.  Most of us, steeped in our own insecurities, feel that we’ll be better received that way. The truth is the world wants you.  That’s why you were made in the first place.  Shine your own truth.  Show your own face.  Be you. To our perfect imperfection, Dave Read More »

Thank You!

Many of us are going to be taking time with our families next week and so I wanted to get this in early. Without getting overly cheesy, let’s remember November in general and Thanksgiving in particular have become a time for giving thanks and expressing gratitude. I want to take this moment to express my thanks. First to you, my readers. I am grateful for this opportunity to share my ideas. That you take time from your day to read and respond to these missives is greatly encouraging. I admit that there is much I have to learn in this… Read More »
