Sara Gustafson Eye

Meet Sara Gustafson Eye. Sara is a holistic health consultant in Austin, Texas. What, you ask, is a holistic health consultant? In short, Sara is a fitness trainer but her interest goes much further than how many pounds you want to lose or what size your waist band is. Sara’s interest is in your health. All of it. How well do you sleep? What’s your stress like? Are your hormones balanced? How’s your lipid profile? How well are you living this thing we call life? Listen in as we discuss the importance of all of the above and how … Read More »

Dewey Nielsen

Meet Professor Dewey Nielsen. Dewey’s a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, hence the title professor, and a movement specialist. And by movement specialist I mean he specializes in movement, which actually makes him a generalist. Dewey feels that the human body was designed to move and in all kinds of ways. The better we move in all of these different ways the better we are. Body flow, power lifting, yoga, weight lifting, boxing, martial arts, you name it, regardless of your discipline Dewey can find something of value in it. Odds are he’s already doing it, too. Dewey lives … Read More »

F. P. DeLeon

Meet Fred DeLeon. Fred is one of the trainers at Body Tribe Fitness in Sacramento, California. We met a little over a year ago and really just hit it off. You’ll be able to tell from the interview as it runs more like a conversation between two friends than a true interview. Which honestly, is how I like it best. Fred’s day job is as a life skills coach for developmentally challenged adults and he trains himself and a lucky cadre of clients in the perimeter hours. Listen is as we discuss parenting, comic book super heroes, Voltron, and how they relate … Read More »

Mental Meat Heads 2

Hoo boy. This just might be a mistake. This was supposed to be a joint interview with Jason C. Brown and Chip Conrad, a slick marketing ploy to help promote our upcoming workshop, Mental Meat Heads 2, September 21 and 22, in Indianapolis, Indiana. It would probably be better titled Laugh Track with Three Goobs. If we’re lucky there’s some intelligible material here, after all we are pros and really good at what we do. But the thing is whenever the three of us get together we just end up having so much fun. Which is exactly what you’ll be doing … Read More »

Nuance

Nuance Mandarin Chinese when spoken has four different tones. That means the same word can have four different meanings based on how it’s pronounced. In order to not come off as a total idiot it’s crucial that you develop a sensitivity for the nuance. We Americans are not so sophisticated. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, just an observation. There are times when the blunt directness of English, especially the American version, is quite effective. Personally, I prefer it. Having grown up in a house where verbal abuse was veiled in polite language I find it particularly refreshing to know … Read More »

Ryan Magin

In the past week or so since I recorded this week’s interview I have had three separate conversations with guys concerned over “just not feeling as manly as they once did.” During that same period I saw this article and an accompanying documentary discussing how our modern lifestyles are robbing of us of our manhood. Now having grown up in a feminist household with mothers more than a little bitter over “typical males” and the over abundance of too much testosterone in our lives I have to admit getting stuck a little over writing the above sentence. After all I think … Read More »

Of Plans and Purpose

I love it when a plan comes together. That’s the catch phrase of one of my childhood heroes, John “Hannibal” Smith of the A-Team. Actually, my real hero was Mr. T., who played heavy muscle and mechanical genius B. A. Barracus of the aforementioned team, but “I pity the fool” doesn’t really play into today’s blog post. And truth be told I’m stretching Hannibal’s catch phrase because in all honesty I’m not much of a planner. I just sort of head off on a particular path and then revel afterwards about how everything seems to fall into place of it’s … Read More »

New Direction

Sometimes I really drop the ball. This summer has been a case in point. I got so consumed with one aspect of my goal set that I lost perspective and began to deviate from the overall master plan. When I started training, at the ripe age of 35, I had one goal in mind — longevity. I wanted to be the old man in the gym. I wanted to still be vital and active well past the point where most of us will have forsaken such strenuous activities as say — walking or better yet, going to the bathroom solo. … Read More »

Fighting Over 15%

I’ve said this before, but when I started out in the fitness industry I was a total whore. And not in the “I know who I am and what I’m doing” kind of way that takes advantage of the system for my own personal gain. No, I was that wide eyed girl from Kansas who’d never seen the big city before and got taken in by that slick pimp Willie who got her hooked on heroin and out turning tricks in less than two weeks. I became addicted to the idea of what I “could” look like. As if somehow … Read More »

Devin Gage

Meet Devin Gage. Simply put, Devin is one of my heroes. He’s young, just two years out of college, but he’s a single dad, with shared custody of his daughter, AND an entrepreneur. Devin owns his own gym and online coaching service Gage Strength Training. Devin is a man of spirit, passion and commitment. Last January during Mental Meat Heads 1 Devin’s flight from Philly was cancelled due to a snowstorm. Undaunted Devin caught a flight to Atlanta early the next morning, rented a car and drove the remainder of the way from Atlanta, arriving just in time to make the … Read More »
